The year 2018 marked seventy years since the South African election of 1948 and subsequent introduction of apartheid legislation. This year, twenty years will have passed since Douglas Booth’s The Race Game: Sport and Politics in South Africa was awarded the 1999 North American Society for Sport History book award, a capstone of what has become a solid academic foundation of South African sports history. The coming together of these moments in South African history and historiography animates this gathering, dedicated to the study of Global Histories: Sport and Apartheid South Africa. We welcome you to State College for this event!
Papers presented at this event will be eligible for inclusion in a special journal issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport edited by Michelle Sikes, Matt Llewellyn, and Toby Rider.
